AntiquiTEA at Carlos Museum
November 30 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm
The newly renovated gallery of South Asian art at the Carlos Museum features a 10th-century bronze Jain altar that depicts the 24 Jinas, the original teachers of Jainism. Rishabha, the first Jina, sits in the center on a lotus throne, identified by his long, flowing hair and pair of guardian deities seated at his feet.
Assistant Professor of Religion Ellen Gough will discuss the imagery and function of such an altar, and connect it to similar sculptures located in the Jain temples in India and here in Atlanta.
In keeping with Emory’s Gathering Policy, masks must be worn at this event.
